Kata Just memiliki beberapa arti yang berlainan, hal ini bergantung pada konteks obrolan dan suasana/keadaan dari apa yang dibicarakan/dimaksud.
1. Menunjukkan makna “gres saja/beberapa saat yang kemudian”. Kejadian tersebut terjadi di abad lalu, namun waktunya sungguh berdekatan dengan kurun kini atau sempurna sebelum abad kini.
Contoh dalam kalimat:
a. The teacher just came into the classroom.
b. Rama just arrived in five minutes ago.
c. Petty just got a door prize from the bank where she saves her money.
d. The meeting was just started ten minutes ago.
e. Yemi just went to the school with her friends by bus.
f. I’ve just talked to my father about my wedding ceremony.
2. Menambahkan makna kesopanan, tidak memiliki arti khusus. Hal ini digunakan untuk menawarkan kesan bahwa kita menghormati lawan bicara.

b. Can you just explain me about the process of making cheesecake?

Makna dari kata Only :
1. Menunjukkan informasi bahwa sebuah kejadian terjadi “gres-gres ini”, artinya beliau terjadi di era lalu namun jarak waktunya dengan periode sekarang tidak terlampau bersahabat. Tentu hal ini berlawanan dengan just yang memiliki arti ”gres saja”, yang jarak antara periode kemudian dan abad kini sangat bersahabat.
Contoh dalam kalimat:
a. I came back from United States only three weeks ago.
b. They submitted the selesai exam essay only seven days ago.
2. Identifikasi bahwa sebuah benda yakni tunggal atau mampu dibilang “satu-satunya”.
a. Caca is the only child in her family.
b. She is the only one that I have in this world
c. This is the only letter I have of my ex-boyfriend.
d. Only my mother can understand me so well.
*Just dan Only mampu dipakai secara bergantian, atau dengan kata lain mempunyai arti yang serupa dalam sebuah konteks kalimat.
1. It took just a moment to finish cooking the vegetables. = It took only a moment to finish cooking the vegetables.
2. They have just one reason to come back. = They have only one reason to come back.
3. I just came to see you. = I only came to see you. (Dua kalimat ini memiliki makna yang sama, tetapi kata “only” lebih sopan dipakai.)
*Perhatikan kalimat dibawah ini:
• I just bought two novel books. ( = Saya gres saja membeli dua buku novel.)
• I bought just two novel books. ( = Saya hanya membeli dua buku novel.)
Dua kalimat tersebut sama-sama memakai kata just, tetapi keduanya mempunyai makna yang berbeda.
* ‘Just’ juga dapat bermakna ‘sempurna’ atau ‘persis’
• That is just (exactly) like what I got from my best friends. (Itu persis seperti yang saya dapatkan dari sahabat-sahabat saya.
